If you're really into animals for children, why not go to an animal shelter and let the children pick an animal in need to pet, feed or adopt? Let them experience how good it feels to help any animal in need of care and a home. Could be a valuable life lesson, and enjoyable, because someone "rescued" an animal, and the children will always remember doing it. If an animal gets adopted, the kids will watch it grow with them. An original idea too. Call the shelter and talk to the supervisor, as they may come to your house.
